A Longitudinal Investigation of the Changes in Work Motivation and Employees’ Psychological Health

Organizations strive to motivate employees thrive at work. However, employees’ motivation is likely vary over a short period (e.g., few months) cope with the routine dynamics of organizations’ activities. These covary affective, cognitive, and behavioral outcomes in workplace. Moreover, psychological health, multidimensional concept focused on individual’s well/ill-being simultaneously, changes time. Using integrated theoretical frameworks self-determination theory (SDT) hierarchical model self-determined (H-SDT), this research sought examine motivational following dual-path model. In particular, work unpack temporal subjective well/ill-beings predicted by basic needs satisfaction/frustration through autonomous/controlled motivation, while considering characteristics people’s general causality orientations (trait-level motivation). Over four months, longitudinal field data were collected from several private small businesses consumer product retail industry. Latent growth modeling (LGM) results supported positive dual relations between health satisfaction/frustration, but neither nor indirect change paths via significant. Finally, we discussed practical implications findings. Limitations possible future directions further line dynamic also summarized.
